MP Cheryl Hardcastle on World Down Syndrome Day

March 21, 2016

NDP critic for Sports and Persons with Disabilities Cheryl Hardcastle (Windsor-Tecumseh) made the following statement on World Down Syndrome Day:

"Today we recognize the right of persons with Down syndrome to enjoy full and equal rights – including the opportunity to participate fully in their communities. Four areas of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals are particularly focused on the needs of persons with disabilities, including those with Down syndrome – access to inclusive education, employment, public transport, and social, economic and political inclusion.

Unfortunately persons with Down syndrome continue to face stigmatization, abuse and lack of support – often beginning early in life. But when children with Down syndrome are given the opportunity to participate fully, everyone benefits, and the result is friendship, acceptance, and respect.

New Democrats believe government plays a vital role in promoting inclusive policies and raising awareness about social justice for persons with disabilities, including those with Down syndrome. Concrete steps must be taken to protect and promote the rights of persons with Down syndrome and all those who face exclusion due to a disability.

The NDP remains committed to building a socially just, inclusive country where no one is left behind. We will press the government to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”
